Microsoft Windows™ users who want to deploy the popular Asterisk open source PBX system finally have a solution — sort of.
N2Net, a provider of mission critical communication hosting, announce the immediate availability of AstWind, a package allowing users of several Windows platform to run Asterisk, but only as a Voice over IP application.
"AstWind allows Windows users to safely install and test the Asterisk PBX with the click of a button." said Gregory Boehnlein, Vice President of N2Net. "Prospective users can test the software and become familiar with it before deploying a full Linux system. Developers can maintain multiple environments for testing and PBX Administrators can create disaster recovery plans to backup existing installations."
Most VoIP only features are available on the Windows version, although there is currently no support for any hardware interfaces. The AstWind package contains a full development environment and the Asterisk PBX pre-installed on a Debian GNU Linux filesystem.
Through the coLinux networking subsystem, Asterisk has access to the network and can participate fully as a unique server.
Cooperative Linux (short-named coLinux) is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively. It is a port of the Linux kernel that allows it to run cooperatively alongside another operating system on a single machine. For instance, it allows one to freely run Linux on Windows 2000/XP, without using a commercial PC virtualization software such as VMware, in a way which is much more optimal than using any general purpose PC virtualization software.
"The creation of AstWind was remarkably easy, thanks to the amazing work of the coLinux project which allowed us to setup a Debian GNU Linux environment on Windows with minimal overhead," Boehnlein said. "The entire process took less than an hour. For obvious reasons, I do not advocate using AstWind for mission critical installations, but it does open some interesting doors for hobbyists and developers. With AstWind, users can experiment with the Asterisk PBX in a no-risk manner."

Covad to Conduct Trials of Next-Generation DSLAM Technology

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 13, 2005-- Covad Communications Group, Inc. (OTCBB:COVD - News), a leading national provider of integrated voice and data communications, will begin trials in the next 30 days of line-powered voice access that would enable Covad strategic partners to offer local and long distance voice services to their customers in competition with the local telephone companies.
Line-powered voice access is made possible by next-generation Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) technology that enables fast deployment of new value-added services and provides the foundation for services in a next-generation broadband network. Nokia (NYSE:NOK - News) and Zhone Technologies (Nasdaq:ZHNE - News) are providing the new DSLAMs and voice cards to be used in the trials.
Line-powered voice access will offer an alternative to competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) to transition lines off the Bell's UNE-P voice service platform and onto Covad's nationwide UNE-L network. Customers will have the potential to choose an alternative to the local phone company and receive basic local and long distance voice services, other Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)-enabled advanced services, and DSL bundles from competing brands. Line-powered voice access marries the usability of traditional phone service with the advanced features of VoIP, while allowing CLECs to leverage the cost efficiencies of VoIP in their networks. The trial will be conducted in the first half of 2005 in Atlanta, Denver and San Jose. Covad plans to offer the service commercially in the second half of 2005.
"Line-powered voice access will allow Covad to provide CLECs and their customers around the country a facilities-based alternative to the local phone companies' UNE-P platform for voice services," said Charles Hoffman, president and CEO of Covad Communications. The Nokia and Zhone DSLAMs and line cards enable line-powered voice access by taking the analog voice signal from a customer's basic telephone and converting it into digital form at the Covad central office where the DSLAM is located. The digital signal is then transported over Covad's nationwide facilities-based broadband network and connected to any telephone on a VoIP network or the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) managed by the local phone companies.
This system of service delivery means that line-powered voice access provides a full primary telephone line replacement service. Most importantly, it is powered at the central office, just like traditional local service, ensuring continued phone service during a power outage. Also, it allows customers to use their existing phones and inside wiring, and avoid time-consuming and costly installations.
Unlike DSL broadband service, line-powered voice access is not distance sensitive. That means Covad's nationwide network will, in the future, be able to serve 40 percent more customers with basic voice services in the current Covad footprint.

The 99-page NIST report, "Security Considerations for Voice over IP Systems," includes nine recommendations for IT managers to help them implement VoIP in a secure manner. "Lower cost and greater flexibility are among the promises of VoIP for the enterprise, but VoIP should not be installed without careful consideration of the security problems introduced," the report says.

Astricon Training: Introduction to Asterisk 5-day bootcamp
Last week we completed the first Astricon Training class, a five-day "Introduction to Asterisk". As usual the first time you run a class, students help you form and change the class so we know have a new release of this class that we are going to run on these two occasions in Europe and in the USA:

These classes are now open for registrations. There are a limited number of seats, so register quickly if you want to participate. The class is a combination of teoretical presentations and practical labs.
